Your mission statement is a chance to tell the world (and your target audience) who you are and what you stand for. It’s a big deal, and it can feel overwhelming to summarize who you are in a statement. Take a deep breath; I got you! I will give you the copywriter insider tips on crafting your mission statement.
Here’s the basic formula you want to follow: [What you do] + [Who you serve] + [How you do it] + [Why it matters]
Identify your organization and why you exist. Use language that lands well with your key audience. Use words that set the stage for your business’s impact in your industry. People want to imagine themselves using your services/products. The most important thing to remember when writing a mission statement is to keep your audience at the forefront. What inspires them? What resonates with them? Make it clear what solutions you can bring them. Clarity and emotional connection will get you far when crafting a strong mission statement.
After writing it, make sure to say it out loud. Say it in the mirror and verbalize it to your support system. When you practice it, make sure it feels authentic and powerful to who you are and your business goals. This is your mission statement, and it should be the best version of you. If it doesn’t feel quite right, revisit your mission statement and refine it! Refining means making small adjustments or changes to improve it. It is okay if your statement is a work in progress as you figure out exactly who you are in your industry. It can also be helpful to get feedback from other people. Ask people how they feel when they read it and hear it.
Just because you choose a mission statement doesn’t mean it needs to be the one forever. In fact, it will likely change as your business grows and changes. That’s okay! Part of being a business owner is positioning yourself so you are ready to grow and evolve as the time comes.
